For “Throwback Thursday,” we’re going back to the last century (1999) —and back to Times Square.
4 Times Square, a high-rise designed by Fox & Fowle was then under construction. A crane accident had destroyed hundreds of lights in the newly installed, structurally glazed curtain wall.
The silicone sealant adhering the glass to the aluminum had been factory applied. However, the only practical repair entailed field application of new sealant, and the project’s curtain wall consultant declined to participate in determining the viability of this approach.
So, SUPERSTRUCTURES worked with scientists at GE, the sealant manufacturer, to develop a series of lab and field tests to verify the effectiveness of the field installation and produced a thorough and persuasive report that reassured all stakeholders.
Twenty-five years later, the repaired curtain wall is still in place.
