Brooklyn Public Library Project on the Books

We’re excited to share that the Landmarks Preservation Commission has approved our project to restore the exterior of the Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Library (Alfred Morton Githens and Francis Keally, 1935-41). SUPERSTRUCTURES has conducted previous restorations for the facility, including the plaza.

An Art Deco icon, the building is a New York City Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Restoration work includes: parapet coping restoration; installation of roof railing guards; replacement of damaged masonry units; bronze window restoration; repair of spalled and cracked limestone and granite; stone masonry cleaning and repointing; deteriorated stucco repairs; sealant joint restoration; and installation of new flashing at roof mechanical curbs.

For this project, SUPERSTRUCTURES is collaborating with Toshiko Mori Architect (interior restoration and design), Gilbane Building Company (construction management), Nicholson & Galloway, Inc. (contractor), and Envoie Projects (owner’s representative).

With the construction phase underway, we’re proud to be part of the design team, contributing to the preservation of one of Brooklyn’s distinctive cultural assets.
