As long-time on-call Structural Engineer for One New York Plaza, an iconic 50-story tower at the tip of lower Manhattan, SUPERSTRUCTURES was tasked with a flood mitigation project now nearing completion. During 2012’s super-storm Sandy the tower’s three below-ground levels were flooded. Newly installed stackable flood barriers at the entrances to the building’s concourse and hinged flood gates with dual seals at the loading dock entrance will protect the building in the event of another major storm affecting this low-lying zone. Since Sandy, major flooding events throughout the country have served as a continuing reminder that structural resiliency is now an important concern for building owners, managers and their A/E consultants.
