SUPERSTRUCTURES provided investigation, design, and construction administration services to restore the exterior envelope of Woodhull Medical Center (Kallmann & McKinnell, 1970-82). Some of the original details of the building’s COR-TEN steel facade did not allow sufficient drainage, leading to severe corrosion at certain edge conditions. Restoration included: cutting and welding of steel spandrel panels; installation of new plates, angles, and framing; replacement of all backing materials and sealant at steel joints; and restoration of vertical building expansion joints. Material compatibility was also critical in this project. Over thirty-one (31) miles of sealant replacement at steel joints was required, so diligent testing of sealant to substrate adhesion preceded the start of construction.
