Constructed in 2006, this NYU residence hall at 120 East 12th Street was experiencing water infiltration issues. SUPERSTRUCTURES provided investigation, design, and construction administration services to address and remediate these issues. Visual inspection and probes of the building’s cavity call system showed that water was penetrating the facade at the projecting concrete “eyebrows,” where failed flashing and horizontal mortar joints and lack of pitch at the eyebrow ledge allowed water to enter the cavity and seep through the concrete back-up. Defective weep holes also trapped water within the cavity wall. Restoration included: replacement of the expansion joint system; installation of new through-wall flashing; concrete spall repairs; stone crack repairs; and stone pinning. The project also included restoration of the extant portion of St. Anne’s Church on the site.
