Begun in 1959, and designed by reknowned mid-twentieth century architect Morris Lapidus, the Doubletree Metropolitan Hotel (originally The Summit Hotel) was Lapidus's first hotel in New York City. The curving north and south elevations are clad in light green glazed brick and dark green mosaic tile. The top three stories are faced in green structural glass. The hotel's sinuous plan and bold facade colors are hallmarks of Lapidus' style and very unusual for a major structure in Manhattan. In 2005 the hotel was designated as an Individual Landmark by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission. SUPERSTRUCTURES has been retained to inspect the facades and issue the Local Law 11 - Cycle 7 & 8 Critical Examination Report.
