Designed by William M. Kendall of McKim, Mead & White and completed in 1927, Casa Italiana houses Columbia University’s Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America. The Renaissance Revival-style facility at 1161 Amsterdam Avenue is a New York City Landmark. SUPERSTRUCTURES provided investigation, design, and construction administration services to restore the ceiling of the building’s Teatro (theater).
The Teatro’s decorative plaster ceiling had been subjected to water penetration from HVAC equipment above, causing localized damage. The age of the ceiling also contributed to observed deficiencies, including staining, cracks, displacement, and losses.
Restoration work included: restoration of the ceiling plaster and frieze area, including crack repair and hole patching; refinishing of existing ceiling plaster, including peeling paint removal; repainting of existing ceiling plaster; restoration of ornamental crest and medallions on interior walls; restoration of plaster stage proscenium, plaster frieze, and columns at rear of the theater; restoration of interior plaster wall panels, including plaster touch up and surface cleaning; and repair and refinishing of wood wainscoting and doors.
