We’re honored that the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) has entrusted SUPERSTRUCTURES with the design for restoration of the roofs on its Manhattan campus—roofs that protect billions of dollars of artwork including Picassos, Monets, Van Goghs, and Warhols.

The roof is a building’s first line of defense against the elements; ensuring the integrity of roofing systems is critical to keeping water infiltration from damaging interiors, disrupting occupants, and, in this case, endangering irreplaceable artwork (not to mention disappointing millions of museum visitors).

We investigated the museum’s existing roof systems, including EPDM membranes with precast pavers, built-up roofs with mineral cap sheets, fluid-applied membranes, metal panels, and decorative rock gardens and planters. Based on our examination, we’ve devised measures to remediate roof system deterioration, drainage problems, biological growth, and flashing and coping failures.

Whether working on a residential building, a school, a hospital, or a museum, you might say that we’ve made an art form of roof restoration.
