This Day in History: December 8th—Designation of the Tribeca East Historic District
The cornice of 52 Lispenard Street.

On this day in 1992, the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) designated the Tribeca East Historic District. Encompassing 197 buildings, it’s a companion to the Tribeca West Historic District (established in 1991) and stretches eastward toward Lafayette Street. Tribeca East preserves a variety of commercial and residential buildings from the mid-19th century through the early 20th century, many of them related to the booming textile and dry goods trades of that era. An array of revival styles—including Italianate, Second Empire, and Greek revival—is rendered in cast-iron facades complemented by marble, sandstone, and brick.

Tribeca East is adjacent to SUPERSTRUCTURES’s current home in the separately landmarked AT&T building and the firm’s portfolio includes projects nearby within the historic district. 52-54 Lispenard Street is a pair of conjoined 19th century buildings converted to residential lofts. SUPERSTRUCTURES designed roofing and waterproofing systems for the structure’s newly constructed terraces, balconies, and roofs. Our earlier project for 395 Broadway (Robert Maynicke, 1899) replaced the building’s windows with a design consistent with the LPC’s standards for the district. We’re proud to help maintain Tribeca’s historic architectural character.
