SUPERSTRUCTURES was retained to conduct graffiti removal from four NYC DCAS-owned buildings: 1 Centre Street (the Dinkins Manhattan Municipal Building), 23-31 Chambers Street (the Surrogate’s Courthouse), 49-51 Chambers Street, and 52 Chambers Street (the Tweed Courthouse). With the approval of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, the firm tested a number of graffiti removal products and methods. Remediation work consisted of removing paint graffiti from concrete and bluestone pavers, granite and marble masonry, and copper and bronze elements at and adjacent to all facades with chemical cleaners and a low-pressure water rinse. A protective coating matching the stone colors and textures was added with the assistance of an artist specializing in such applications.
