The main P.S. 40 building was designed and built in 1897-98. In Dutch and Federal Styles, the school was designed by Charles B. J. Snyder. An addition was built in 1929. SUPERSTRUCTURES provided investigation, design, and construction administration services for an exterior restoration. The scope of work included replacement in kind of terra cotta; repointing of terra cotta masonry joints, terra cotta sill replacement; limestone joint repointing; lintel replacement and spandrel repair; full brick parapet replacement at the north and west elevations of the addition building; repair of interior finish damage; replacement of seven roofs over addition building; and waterproofing at foundation walls.
